First the question: How/What are the programs created with?

Background: PlayBuddy and BadgeHelp are programs that help you play, or simply play for you, various Pogo and Yahoo games. (Their respective websites can be found by adding dot-com to their names.) Many are fairly low on the AI scale, simply getting input from the game you are playing and blindly following certain steps (push this button, then this button). Some have varying bits of logic (which word is worth the most points, which cards have already been played, etc.)

This type of programming peaks my interest and I would like to learn more about how such programs are created.
