the internal file transfer rate is capped at the rate of your disk can transfer.
Internet is capped by your data plan you have.
usb transfer is capped at :1.1 is 1.5mbit low powered, 12mbits full powered| 2.0 is 480mbits.
LAN is limited to your computer's connect (wireless g is 54mbps, n is 300 mbits, ethernet is limited to 10/100/1000 mbits)

In the real world, you'll never saturate the drive's full bandwidth.
A SATA 3G HDD plugged internally has a avg. read of 67MB/s
Plug the same drive to a USB 2.0 port and it drops down to avg. read of 32MB/s
And although USB 2.0 is faster than 1394A (480 vs 400), but 1394A has a sustained transfer rate, thus making 1394A a better option over USB 2.0.
eSATA is currently the best way to gain maximum transfer rate as possible for external drives.
