Or perhaps a better question, why do people even buy automatics? Other than out of sheer laziness...
Manuals perform far better, get better gas mileage, give you far more control over the car, are more fun to drive, are cheaper, more reliable if driven correctly.
I had to drive an automatic for a month and absolutely hated it.
Why would anyone buy an automatic, other than laziness?

Learning to drive? Disabilities? Don't want to spend money replacing the clutch when you tear it out from fucking up shifting? Or for some people who drive long distances a lot, it gets tiring, especially if you have a firm clutch, holding it in at red lights all the time.

Doesn't take long at all to learn how to drive without wearing the clutch too much. I know people who have made clutches last longer than 20 years in their cars.
As far as long distances, I think it makes it a little less boring if anything. I also just throw it into neutral at stop lights, got tired of holding the clutch in after about a week of driving stick.

I don't see how it makes it less boring...
When your driving an automatic, you just either accelerate or brake with feet, and with both hands, control steering of the vehicle.
If your driving a manual, you got to think more...
Wait till a good time to shift, then release acceleration, then hold clutch, then shift to next gear, then accelerate again.
While driving, especially with a variable speed, this gets extremely annoying. You have to think constantly. Instead with an auto you just accelerate/brake. It makes life more easier, and possible safer, especially for the people who drive with 1 hand and hold the gear nob with the other hand. If any emergency situation happens, which may happen in milliseconds, your response may be slower, or less accurate with one hand, especially if your going to move your 2nd hand back to the steering wheel...
Personally, I go for automatic for ease of use, safer in an emergency and easier to learn as a first time driver.

| You don't have to think more. It becomes pretty subconscious after driving the same car for a while. Also, using an automatic to learn is stupid. If you learn in an automatic you have to then learn how to drive manual but that isn't the same the other way round.

| I prefer manual, no real reason though.. We have two cars, one auto & one manual. I would say I prefer manual cause of the great possibility of accelerating like fuck on second gear or something & get pure beast enginery, but that isn't really true either as the auto shifts down one gear when you hit the paddle hard & accelerate up. It's complicated, yea, but ah.

You don't have to do either of them.. Keeping your foot on the clutch is something you aren't supposed to do.

Woah! About a second on the clutch. Do you have a club foot or something?

You lose a lot of power in the torque converter on an automatic though, plus there's the lag of waiting for the car to shift itself.

I really don't believe there can be a better option than the other. It all comes down to personal preference, much like the PS3 vs Xbox kind of debate. If you want a car that has what a manual gives, you'll buy a manual car. This is the same for Automatic, some people enjoy the luxury of not having to shift gears every so often.
Personally, I prefer Manuals, but that's because I'm 16 and have only ever driven a car in a parking lot, or a very short distance (Both Manual and Automatic). Additionally, performance shouldn't matter a great deal (0 - 60, perhaps) unless you intend to use the car in a race, break the speed limits or travel to the Autobarn. If the racing style is applicable, you're probably talking about a whole different type of car anyway.

| I prefer automatic you can pay more attention to the road so you dont have an accident when the car f*cks the clutch up.

If you're having to shift, it's forcing you to pay more attention to what's going on around you.
Also there's no way you'd have an accident due to the clutch fucking up, worst case scenario the clutch slips and your RPM's shoot way up, while the car travels the same speed. Not going to cause an accident.
