Every time I try to play a game, my computer screen goes black and my computer locks up.

For example, if I start up Cod4, my screen goes black, my computer locks up(keyboard / mouse), but I can still here the sound and music playing through the speakers. This forces me to unplug my computer in order to restart it.

This happens with all other games I've tried also. The only one game that doesn't cause this to happen is games that start in Windowed modes, such as World of Warcraft and Team Fortress 2.

I have tried all the following so far:
-Updated BIOS
-Updated Drivers
-Changed CPU Fan speed
-Overlocked and Declocked GPU
-Scanned for viruses/spyware(everything's clean)

Here are my computer specs:
Processor: Intel Core2 Quad @ 2.66GHz
Graphics card: NVIDIA 9500 GS(512mb dedicated memory)
Operating System: Windows Vista 64-bit

I'm not sure what to do now... I cant play any games and have tried everything to fix this problem.

Edit: This problem started about a month ago. Ive had this computer for a little over a year.

Your monitor/GPU are probably at war over resolutions.

Monitor: I don't support that resolution, go back to x.
GPU: I don't support that resolution, go back to y.
Monitor: I don't support that resolution, go back to x.
GPU: I don't support that resolution, go back to y.
Monitor: I don't support that resolution, go back to x.
GPU: I don't support that resolution, go back to y.
Monitor: I don't support that resolution, go back to x.
GPU: I don't support that resolution, go back to y.
Ad nauseum.

My only suggestion would be to get a different monitor if possible as it's most likely a hardware conflict.

1. Does your monitor lose signal or just go black?

2. Does this happen EVERY time you open a game?

3. Does the sound keep playing or does it go into a 'looping'?

4. What does the event viewer have to say about this? It should tell you if the application hung, your display driver crashed, etc.

Since windowed mode is fine, I'm going to say go reinstall the DirectX redistributable, uninstall your display drivers, clean them out with something like driver sweeper in safe mode, then reinstall the latest.

But why did this start randomly around a month ago? Ive had this comp for over a year and this problem hasn't happened till about a month ago.

1. It just goes black. The light is still on and everything.
2. Yes it happens every time I open a game in full screen mode.
3. The sound keeps playing
4. Event viewer?

I have tried reinstalling DirectX, but I will try uninstalling my drivers and reinstalling to the latest to see if that works. Ill wait for my discussion and answers in this thread until I do so.

You failed to mention that in the first post.

shit doesn't magically break over time, if something is broken, it's your fault in one way or another.
