Michael Jackson suffered a heart attack this afternoon at his home and died shortly thereafter. Doctors at the UCLA Medical Center pronounced Jackson dead around 3 p.m. PDT after arriving in a deep coma, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Paramedics arrived at the Holmby Hills home Jackson was renting at 12:26 p.m. PDT and found Jackson not breathing, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Steve Ruda. Paramedics performed CPR and took Jackson to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda told the LA Times.

Jackson, the record-breaking, sensationally gifted "King of Pop" who emerged from childhood superstardom to become the entertainment world's most influential singer and dancer, and the tabloid world's most disturbing celebrity, was 50.

Jackson's shocking death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

This past May, Jackson had announced a string of comeback tours beginning in London in 2010.

Jackson is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson II.

Joe Jackson, the family patriarch, had told the site his son "is not doing well" when news of his heart attacked first broke.
