and you can unlock 2 more cores and make it a quad core.
True, or myth?

I think its a myth.
Looks like one and the person doesn't really have proof that he did it.

Its true, BUT the core/cores that are dissable are instable and to work
you have to lower the mHz on it ALOT which mean the other cores have
to wait for it and it will in the end lower the preformance and make your
computer unstable.
This is possible for amd:
- Phentom II 2/3core
- Athlon II 2/3 cores
This is proven and it works 100%. You have to use the correct bios tho.
Thats possible to flash to get.

Humper

Then whats the use of having 4 low powered cores when you could have 2 powerful ones

Bragging rights.
"LOL I BOUGHT A POWERFUL DUAL CORE PROCESSOR AND UNLOCKED 2 EXTRA CORES NOW IT'S A QUAD CORE"
Too bad it's pointless to do so.

Pretty useless
Bragging rights?! its more like people laughing at you. They'll be like you have a quad core?! how much GHZ?! You say: 0.9 GHZ BISH SO PRO.
So useless unless you can super overclock each core to atleast 2 Ghz or even 1.5 Ghz.

Hm, actually, after reading the article kls posted, it seems that the processor thought is was a Phenom II 940 running @ 3.1GHz after unlocking the extra cores and ran stable.
It is possible that AMD grabbed a handful of good 940s, disabled two cores and sold them as 550s to keep up with demand - to be fair, they've done it before - however it's more likely that two of the cores were faulty somehow. If you're lucky, though, that'd certainly be a nice treat, huh?

That's how it's always been for CPU makers. When ever a new CPU comes out they always presented with their highest/most expensive model to capture potential buyers, but this CPU makes little profit and the ones that brings in the money are those in the mainstream or value segment.
Since that's how it is, a popular/expensive model may be rebranded and sold as something else.
AMD does this and I won't be surprised if Intel tuned down their QX9770 into a Q9650 or Q9400.

useless until you feed it an application that takes advantage of it.
a ray tracer for example would likely scale completely linearly as cores increase.
