I"m going shopping tomorrow for a laptop/mac.
But I'm pretty new at this! So i don't want to be pressured or get tricked into a lowly developed computer. Budget is around 1,000
What am I mostly looking for in a "fast" computer for gaming/school work that would last for a long period. And what am I looking for , for an extra boost in the new system?

Very less time and I appreciate it if everyone who knows about these things can help. I'm not buying over the internet. So i must know what i"m looking for. Thanks once again!

Oh, and I may want to get a mac , so you mac experts, shine to me!

Gaming-dedicated laptops suffer from horrible performance in comparison to their desktop counterparts, extreme over-pricing, low battery life, and weight. As for schoolwork, a nice, cheap netbook will be good, and you can always spend the extra $650 left on a custom gaming computer. The Asus EEE PC 1000HE is among the best of the netbooks. It offers good performance, enough for general usage, is lightweight, cheap, and can go over 5 hours under load, 9 hours using the most battery-saving options.

Cool, but i don't think I'll be upgrading my desktop.
I'm also looking for specific terms when I'm actually listening to what the system has and on the label. what am i looking for that is necessary for a "fast" and efficient laptop for gaming/school work. and what extras am I looking for and what benefit comes with that.

Well for not buying online and looking at bestbuy, I would think this one is your best bet. It's about 90 over your budget if that's fine with you.

How long is a 9 -cell lithium batter's life span?

4GB DDR3 memory
For multitasking power. 1066MHz frontside bus, 3MB L2 cache and 2.26GHz processor speed.

This is kinda slower than usual with the 2.26 ghz

Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive
With double-layer support records up to 8.5GB of data or 4 hours of video using compatible DVD+R and DVD-R DL media; supports DVD-RAM; supports Labelflash direct-disc labels using compatible media.

what does this actually mean? Dual dvd drives?

NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS graphics
Features 1GB of GDDR3 discrete video memory for lush images and vivid detail. 2 built-in speakers with high-definition audio support. HDMI v1.2 connector.

Is it consider better than average for gaming/watching videos?

But I can't really find sound? Does this laptop or all laptop have sound?

The lifespan of a 9-cell li-ion battery depends on its actual power capacity in mAh and the power draw of your system. With the 6-cell li-ion battery in the 1000HE that does 8700mAh, a single charge offers up to 9 hours, 7.5-8 hours with general, day-to-day usage. I doubt you'd be able to hit more than 3.5 hours with a big sucker like that one.

The 'usual'? That's not very slow at all for a laptop.

It's one DVD drive that can read/write to DVDs and CDs alike.

Decent, although, like I said before, getting a $650 desktop build would far exceed the performance of this Gateway laptop, and most laptops through the $2000 segment.

High definition audio is presumably integrated into the motherboard.

There is no way to tell how long a 9-cell lithium battery will last, unless you actually test it... Or give us the power-draw of the laptop and a mAh of the battery. 9 cell almost means nothing.

DO NOT get a Mac. It's not in your budget range.

Wait for the IdeaPad S12.

You might also want to see this Asus gaming laptop, it should offer very similar performance at almost $200 cheaper. It's also a good bit lighter.

1st look at the laptop "wow, the cover looks awesome!"
But, it's abit slower and the graphic's memory is only half of the other one.
And the gateway supports microsoft works , which is needed for word processing etc.

I would still get the gateway though.

I checked future shop, eh... not so great gaming computers.

I don't think Microsoft Works includes Office Word, only a 'demo-fied' version. Works is useless crapware by my definition. Windows comes built in with WordPad, which can perform basic word processing. You could always grab a copy of OpenOffice or get Office by other means.

The 512MB of memory on the 9800M GS featured in the Asus is more than enough, especially since it uses low-bandwidth 128-bit GDDR3, the same with the 9800M GTS. The 9800M GTS is even more bloated than the 9800M GS with 1GB of VRAM, most of which is wasted because most applications (including games) will not burn much more than 512MB, which is the sweet-spot ATM. If you wanted higher-grade gaming, then stick with desktops using the GT200 chipset or RV770, as regardless of how much video memory is actually being used (for example, GTA IV with textures on high), you'll probably experience a bottleneck with the GPU, specifically.
