Notebook, netbook, not that much difference there.

Well, it's a cheap laptop @ $500.

Nice memory, decent display size, decent enough RAM, good battery, and can be used for all the basic stuffs.

If he's gaming or planning to use the laptop for lots of various things, don't get it. If he's mainly using it to surf the net, write some word documents/excel documents, etc. it's a great buy for the price he gets.

Also, you do mean this laptop, right?

There are differences between netbooks and notebooks.

Processor:
Netbooks: Intel Atom (single Core), low voltage, does not require that much cooling
Notebook: AMD or Intel based dual cores or mobile quads

Optical drive: No netbooks have a optical drive (heard there is a reason for this)
Notebook: DVD writer, Blu-ray you name it

Screen real estate
Notebook: starts from 12.1 and got all the way up to like 22"
Netbook: Max currently is 10.1 but will be a 11.x inch in the future.

Price/weight
Netbooks: Aprox: $500
Notebook of the same price will be around 15.4" but it's heavy for some users.

For notebook to do down in screen size and weight, the price will sky rocket.

My client order an Toshiba Protege R500 about the same size as a 10.1 inch netbook and it cost $3000.
