I'm working in a group that's making a mod for a game and I'm making weapons. I haven't had any real training and taught myself most of the time but here's some of the work I've done. Note that the textures are low-res and the models are low-poly because it's for a game.

some training videos will help lots but you got a nice start there

I would recomend you to chamfer the edges of the blade and the places where each material ends and then apply a turbosmooth/meshsmooth modifier

its 3ds max right? or maya? or softimage?
it doesnt looks like blender anyways xP so I'm guessing is 3ds max

It's in Maya, but the game it's for has battles with hundreds of individual units with their own AI and if they all have high-poly weapons it would be impossible to know where you're going.

I play occasionally but I mostly just design art for it. It's just fun to see something that you've made actually being used in a game.
