P5Q uses DDR2 1200mhz not DDR1, be aware when it comes to HDD'z/DVD'z, that they are preferably SATA, not IDE/PATA

That wouldn't matter because he is using his old dvd and hdd drives.

I never said it matters saf...
I said: PREFERABLY...
Check if the P5Q used IDE/SATA and check you drives if they are SATA/IDE...

Why would it matter what connections they are if he is using his old drives?

Because if P5Q doesn't support IDE, he must check his drives aren't IDE.
Do you have to reply about everything I say...

All boards have at least one IDE port for the time being now.

He has 4 bloody drives...
1 IDE port may not be enough...
Just listen dude.
Check how many your 4 Drives if they are SATA/IDE...
Then check how many SATA/IDE ports your motherboard has...

Something called an IDE to sata adapter, why buy totally new drives then just get an adapter?

Quote: | intel core 2 duo e8400 - CPU
good
gigabyte gtx 260 - GPU
good; an alternative would be the HD4870, which has nearly identical performance and is usually a bit cheaper. If not, the GTX260 is fine too.
corsaid hx-620 - PSU
total overkill, for that system the 450W one would be more than sufficient
asus p5q - MOBO
good, an alternative would be this, but either is fine
coolermaster 690 - CASE
good, solid case; an alternative would be the antec 300, seeing as it won't need to cool much
2gig ddr1 - RAM
no. You need ddr2 RAM for the mobo. Get this or this if you trust MIRs.
my own cd/dvd and my own 3 hard drives (plan on formatting)
Be sure they're SATA, most newer mobos only have one IDE port. |

I approve of Zarr's post. My comments:
High-end dual cores are going to be last-gen technology as soon as Lynnfield is rolled out probably later this year. I'd recommend waiting for it, since you'll need to get a motherboard capable of supporting the LGA1166 platform (P55). Performance with Turbo Mode is said to be as good as, or better than the Core i7 920 at a much more effective price targeted at mainstream users. If you must stay with the LGA775 platform, try to get even a low-end quad core if you multitask and/or run multi-threaded applications.
I got my XFX GTX 260 for a much better deal than the HD 4870, so it just depends on getting it at the right place at the right time. Slovach said he got his MSI GTX 260 for a steal at $130 on eBay; mines was ~$130 accounting for the combo deal. Compared to the similar HD 4870 at the time (which also had a $30 off combo deal with the same hard drive), the price difference was $5. But still, both the HD 4870 and GTX 260 are great deals if you can find them at under $150.
As for power supply, I'd go with the Corsair CMPSU-450VX as Zarr suggested. But it is considerably more expensive than the CMPSU-400CX which does runs my more power-hungry system well.
All the other suggestions I agree completely on.

Big connectors= IDE
Small connectors = SATA
