Rather than using white for highlights try using a brighter version of the thing you're highlighting.

Play the game and you'll understand why he used white. Needs more shading though, good outline and base colours.

I have played the game, based on the kind of drawing he did however, my advice makes sense.

You need to know that it actually reflects light, it does not shade.
