The Q6600, or the Q9400 about a 6 dollar difference on newegg. The 9400 is 45nm and the 6600 is 65nm is about the only difference I see, also the 6600's cache is bigger. So which one?

You cannot judge a CPU based on cache and besides the process difference. There are other improvements with the Q9400.

If your not overclocking then take the Q9400.
BUT if you do overclock, the Q6600 will work great and
probebly alot/abit btr.

For those people that say you shouldn't look at cache,
you have to look at that.
It give ALOT more preformance often especially when overclocking.

The older Q6600 can do 3GHz on the stock cooler. But there's factors other than just temperatures. Your motherboard might not be able to handle a high, 1600MHz FSB.

The board you got will support most Quad cores starting with the Q6400 all the way to Q9650 including the "S" versions, but you will need to update your bios first in order for it to be recognized.
