What is "Surgery" like?
*Last updated as of March 23rd, 2009
Relative News: I'm having surgery done below my Wisdom Tooth. It seems as if I have a Cyst beneath it. The cyst is under my bottom left wisdom tooth. Overall, tomorrow were discussing the Plan of action for the surgery, or what ever is necessary. I'll post a diagram if I find a good example, so you can understand what I'm explaining better.
Surgery Questions/Procedure: As from what I know now, I'm getting my wisdom teeth pulled very soon. I'm completely scared of surgery, considering this is my first one. But, I do have some questions.
Question 1: Since I'm having surgery on my head, will I have to be awake?
Question 2: Will I be awake while they pull my wisdom teeth out?
Question 3: How long will I be out for, before being normal again?
Question 4: How scary is surgery? Because I hear of people staying awake during the surgery.

| I cant answer most of those questions, but my tonsils got inflamed so I had them removed, they put me out with a gas and everything started getting fuzzy and it seemed as if I was leaving my body. Next think I remember waking up feeling like shit, then passing out every 5 minutes and waking up 5 minutes later then passing out again for a while and throwing up blood. I have to say it was one of the worst experiences I ever had, not to mention I lost about 10 pounds after because I could hardly eat for 10 days. I have heard people waking during heart surgery, but I guess its rare. Good luck with the surgery and get well soon.

When you get a kidney stone that requires them to use a device to go up through your urithra (penis) all the way into your kidneys to retrieve the kidney stone... THATS when you are scared.
Oh how I hate you kidney stones!

Dunno how the procedure works, but if you're getting knocked out then it's fast and easy.
If they tell you they've started the anesthetics, you will probably be out before you can respond. Last time I got put under, I was talking to the nurse about something and I was out before I could finish my next sentence.
Being put out is easy, a couple seconds at most. My ears started ringing first, then my vision started to go. It probably took all of a few seconds.

| You are right. The "Urethra" is not by definition your "penis". However, it is the tube that connects your bladder to the tip of your penis. thus, the hardware that needs to be used (in a more simplified terminology) is inserted through the tip of the penis up into the bladder which then connects to your kidneys. In Medical terms, using the urethra as an entrance point, we will move into your bladder and then the kidneys.

Then you will be drugged up.
If there is pain, oh well, man up.

If it's inside your mouth then you probably will have to be asleep. I'm not too sure I'm just going fromt he basis that if you're away you could laugh, cough or something similar while they're operating.
If you are awake then it won't be bad, you'll be under geenral anesthetic so all you'll feel is them poking you.
| Quote: | | Question 2: Will I be awake while they pull my wisdom teeth out? |
I don't see why they wouldn't do it in the same procedure.
3: No idea. My wisdom teeth are fine where they are.
| Quote: | | Question 4: How scary is surgery? Because I hear of people staying awake during the surgery. |
Not scary at all.

I got surgery in my mouth, awake, twice :]
Nearly swallowed a piece of my tongue then o_O
But it's nothing spooky. Just make sure your doctors aren't shitheads.
When I was a kid (about 6 or so) I bumped my head in a corner, which ripped open the skin below my eyebrow/above my eye. Blood everywhere :3 So I had to get surgery. I got a full anesthetic, but I woke up during the surgery. I wasn't completely aware of my feelings yet, but I could feel 'em poke and pull. They freaked out when they saw my arms move, so I got under again not much after.
Some months later I had the exact same accident again (Yeah, I know, very smart of me). And I woke up -again-.
But as you can see, I'm fine ;p

I don't see why you would need to be awake... Silly thing to say. If they where operating on your brain, and they needed to see brain functions + reactions and things... Then yes, but that is not the case! Aswell, you can ask them to put you out. Most of the time they will put you out if you ask... Just add it onto your bill.
I think you are asleep for the wisdom teeth being taken out... See above last sentence.
You probably wont be out that long, after the surgery you will wake up dissy, get in a wheelchair, and be rolled to your car/moms car/dads/whatever.
Most of them time you can choose your awakeness or sleepness (words?) when getting a surgery...
----
Also, to the person above and the original poster:
The chances of waking up are VERY slim... and i am sure you can sue for mal practice...
They usually dope you up with anestics more than what you would need to be asleep for the surgery.

Question 1 Answer: It depends, most surgery requires you to be under
primary anastesia (which is the one that makes you fall asleep, however
there are other types. I would guess that you wouldn't be asleep, but Im
not a medical technician or anything.
Question 2 Answer: You might, again, it depends of the surgical procedure.
Question 3 Answer: It usually takes about a week on average to heal.
You might stay in the hospital overnight but Im not sure.
You will return to school/ work after a week probably.
Question 4 Answer: Surgery is scary because you have that feeling of the
doctor cutting through you and the fear of pain. Waking up during surgery
never happens. The anesthesiologist makes sure you get enough
anastesia for the surgery, because he can get sued for malpractice.
And plus, they are experienced and know what they're doing.
If he was bad, they'd fire him.
