I had to do a project (a few questions, aktuali) on it, and I'm just wondering, what was the point? It doesn't seem like it mattered that much, y'know, besides all dem people dying and all.
So, like, what did it change in the long run?

OMG!!! I did this like a few months ago in my history class.
Well, it kinda showed how people would rather be isolated from the war rather then helping others. Cuba didn't want them of hate agiants jews, so he lead porpaganda to make people of cuba hate them. Then, U.S. didn't take them for wanting isolationism and the whole depression. So, really they just didn't want them showing how far germen prejiduce went through out the world agianst the jews. 
Poor bastards too... 37 years on sea to just go back and die by the germens... sucky life.

But, ya... presecutions of jews made them unwanted anywhere during pre- and WW2 time range.

If you talking bout nuking.( They couldn't, wasn't perfected at the time)
If you mean airstrike... I guess they liked the place?
