How do I know which ones are compatible?
I would also be getting maybe 1-2gb ram or maybe more if I can afford it.

You're looking for DDR266, similar to these.
Remember that DDR is expensive compared to DDR2 (NOT because it's older, as some people like to say). To buy 2GB is at least 100 dollars.

So when buying I just say, I need "insert number"gb DDR ram?
also why is it expensive? >_>
and are DDR's the only ram compatble with my old computer?

Supply and demand, really. Costs too much for them to make a lot of a product fewer people will buy.
You're looking to get DDR266 (indicates speed). The VIA P4M266A/8235 chipset only supports up to that number.
It's a little cheaper than I had originally thought (I bought older laptop memory a while back, that was expensive).
Newegg: 1GB DIMMs, and 2GB (2X1GB Kit).

Cool thanks.
So I just get exactly a DDR 266.
also how much would it affect my computer? If I were to get a 2gb?

Depending on what speed is in there (they also make DDR200), you may notice a slight performance increase in the way of speed, many manufacturers skimp as much as they can on builds' components. However, you will be able to have more things running in physical memory, so you can multitask more and run more demanding programs (if the rest of your system is up for it).
So yeah, just remember DDR 266 when you go to buy it.
