OK,i play halo PC a lot, about 6 months ago,i had downloaded Halo CE(Custom Edition)and i played it for a while.I loved it.well, you have to have halo pc to install it,and you have to put the Halo PC CD-ROM into the DVD-ROM drive.Normal, right? You know when you go to My Computer and it shows your main drive, floppy drive, and DVD drive?well, about a month ago,the DVD drive icon vanished.i searched my entire computer and couldn't find it.i couldn't play halo or any other game that requires a CD.i thought it might need drivers,so i tried to find some,i got 1,and it turns out,it didn't need drivers after all!i need help,i seriously don't know what to do

the drive that's missing/corrupted is a:
LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163D

and here is what it keeps on saying:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

and not only do i have absolutely no idea what that means,i ALSO don't know how to fix it!please help me!!!!

Your drive filters are corrupted. You will have to manually edit some registry settings in order to get it to work.

If your afraid to fool around with then other only option is to wipe out then entire system and install from scratch.

Code:
Step 1: Start Registry Editor
Start Registry Editor.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry

   1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
   2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
   3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
   4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
   5. In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
          * If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
          * If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
   6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
   7. Click Yes when you receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?

The UpperFilters registry entry is removed.
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry

   1. In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.

Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.

If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
   2. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
   3. Click Yes when you receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
   4. Exit Registry Editor.

Step 4: Restart your computer
Restart your computer. After you have done this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.
.

Double check on the class ID before you do any changes!

If you got a spare parts then yeah you can avoid doing the registry fix, but if you don't then that is your only option (if you don't want to reformat).

Ive encounter several systems with that type of problem and the registry fix works every time. Cool

It's not hard, just follow the directions carefully and you'll see it.
