For $500 you could get a dual core with 2gb of ram and 250gb hard drive
$2000 4gb of ram, 500gb hard drive and a decent video card 9600GS
Possibly, correct me if im wrong

I would get a netbook and build a PC.
Laptops aren't so great for what you're paying.

Getting an external optical drive destroys the whole purpose of a netbook.
Netbooks are suppose to be light and convient. Carring an extra USB optical drive is not something called convient.

Sony Vaio TR series is small in size, but comes with a DVD writer.

I got my EEE PC and I'm content with it. And if I ever need to use it for a DVD then I won't mind because obviously I'm sitting down watching the movie, not running around everywhere.

Netbook is just a term for ultraportable laptop, the sony vaio TR is a netbook really, just a more premium one.

The Vaio TR series is pretty expensive, to me an internal optical drive isn't that important.

With a DVD drive in the Sony TR series you can expect the mainboard to be half the size found in netbooks and when things get small (it uses a Toshiba 1.8" HDD not 2.5") manufacturing cost goes up

Also during that time, the Intel Atom never existed nor is mobile dual cores. What is has is a Intel Pentium M. Those processor's package are huge compare to today's Intel Atoms.

With that little space to work with and that much features to add no wonder it cost 3 grand.

Since netbooks don't have optical drive you can imagine the amount of space they can work with, but if anyone pays 3K without a optical drive you can tell they'll be pissed.
