Ubuntu works great, but I'd suggest dual booting Ubuntu & Windows if you're a gamer.

Explain?
Neither Windows 7 or Linux is bad.
Depends what you're going to use it for. Linux is good for most things (almost everything has an alternative for Linux) and can run some games. Could try Gentoo as a distro and see how you like it.

All Vista drivers work on W7. W7 has a insanely large driver database.

I've always wanted to used an alternative OS besides Windows from Microsoft since I always have this feeling that no company will last forever. So I've started on my venture into the "alternative" OS arena where almost every software and application out there is free or better yet open source. What had driven me to use linux was Ubuntu (on paper that is), but the main reason that had driven me to it was its fancy effects called beryl (term before it was changed). On my previous rig, with a 6600GT graphic cards beryl was supported, but Ubuntu didn't have it build in and in order to enable it, I had to look at wiki sites. So after following the instructions I was on my way to a fancy linux distro, but I was wrong!
It turns out each god damn command ran by the site was dependent from each other so if step 1 and 2 went through, but steps 3's link is dead then I'm back to square 1.
After countless hours of searching for links and run around, I finally managed to get beryl to install and my 3D effects working. In the end I was satisfied with the outcome of it, but the problem is the amount of time it took to get the thing to work.
As for me I can't say I'm purely a genius nor a person with technical skills as if I do think that way then I will never learn new things. People who feels they're superior than others will never learn from those who are more experienced. Am I a newbie when it comes to systems? Not really, I know exactly what I do when it come to computers and so on,
build all of the systems I owned and able to take apart notebooks down to the bone and put it back in working order like it was never taken apart before.
So to hear a person like me to complain on enabling a simple linux feature really shows you how well the linux community is listening to their people or better yet the market share.
If I had this hard of a time to get something to work and even though it's build for it then what do you think about those that barely knows how to turn on a computer?
What will happen to them as they step into the alternative side of OSes?
Lastly some of you may argue with my post saying that Ubuntu already has effects build in, well there is with the current version, but it's not exactly how I've decided it would be.
Turn out it's got a minimal set of fancy effects nothing too fancy nor colorful. To get them extra fancy effects you'll have to do the same thing like it was with previous distros like searching it on the wiki site, but they did improve on it by adding it to their "program download list".
Now did I managed to get the fancy effects I've always wanted working on my new graphic card? Nope, not at all even after countless hours no make that days of searching until I ran out of energy to look for it.
What lies is my graphic card driver not being installed, but doing that was the same pain in the arse as getting Compiz Fusion to work. Sure there are wiki on it and I follow every step, double check to make sure, but still no go. :\
What I don't get is how others with the same card as me manage to get it to work, but I can't is it because I've done something wrong or did the linux community purposely left out a key piece of info since they always have a sense of superiority from the rest of us and tell that key info will make them not important anymore?
Sure linux is a great alternative OS for those what would like to take the challenge of finding out what's new, but to waste time on enabling a simple feature or to install a simple driver is this much of a hassle, then linux can continue hide under a rock as Windows and Mac OS continues to dominate the OS market.
Linux may as well dream on becoming the OS of tomorrow, but that probably won't happen as their too thick headed to realize how pathetic their support is as well as the community as a whole. Sure they make it sound easy and so on, but not all of us knows their term, therefore just because they know it does not mean all of us will too!
As for this I'm not speaking for us technical users who will take the time, but to the average joe or your grandma, linux is not ready and will never be ready for the masses.
If anyone can prove me wrong the go ahread as I challenge you to install linux on all of your families machines and see what happens when one of them calls you at 3am in the morning telling you to help them get a webcam to work.
