Ok first off, I'm really a newbie when it comes to what computer to buy and what not, hence this question:
"What would be a laptop that has the best overall performance in a price range of >$AU1500?"
Extra info:
-Will be using for gaming/movies (viewing and sometimes encoding)/multitasking (in this case alt tabbing from games and doing work et cetera)
-Live in Australia/Sydney.
-Want the OS to be XP since I've never used Vista.
-Since gaming is one of the uses, need one that comes with a nice sound/video card.
-The screen size, preferably, should be 15 inches to 17 inches (nothing too heavy; portable)
-Color, preferably, black/silver but anything other than girly colors would do.
I'll take a look into your recommendations, if any.
Thanks.

Smaller=lighter=longer battery life=$$$$$$, but poor performance.
Larger=heavier=shorter battery life=$$$, but great performance.
Netbooks are another category and yes some are Cheap and some can cost around the same price as a regular laptop.
Them Sony P series are stylish, but it's way beyond what other netbooks cost. Plus none of them netbooks gots a optical drive if you haven't notice.
Look for business line model if you want XP.
