Will it work in a PCI Express slot? I am a noob, so I don't have much of clue when it comes to computers.

Most new graphic cards are PCI express only. Check if your motherboard has a PCI express slot.

Yes, as other posters said already, it will work.

However, consider a step up. For the price of a 8600GT, you can get a 4650 or 9600GSO. If you are lucky, even 4830/8800GS on sale. Those are better choices.

DO NOT GET THE 9600GSO.

You could almost say 8600GT >= 9600GSO.
(9600GT is a decent model but the 9600GSO... no. just no.)
It's not that good at all.
Get a HD4***

Depending on the specific model of the 9600GSO, it can be way faster than the 8600GT.
The crappy 512MB versions with a 128-bit bus and less shader processors suck. Not very much faster compared to the 8600GT.
The 384MB/768MB versions with 192-bit wide memory bandwidth and more shader processors perform far better, at a similar, if not cheaper price point.
Also, the 384MB/768MB versions of the 9600GSO are just rebranded 8800GS's.

Right before most of the 9600GSOs/8800GSs were discontinued, they were really cheap, $50 after rebate. 10-15% slower than the HD 4850, but at less than half the price. It also has amazing overclockability, at upwards of 30% without voltage change on the core, RAM, and shaders. With the voltage at 1.1v, shader clock gets a nice boost, and I managed to get the core 50MHz higher.
