doesnt matter, either way you cancel out one x, leaving you with 8=x/-1, you multiply both sides by -1, and you get -8=x

You can't cancel out an x if there's a (x-1) on the bottom...

Well that's why I asked if he had forgotten the parentheses. I did not want to assume there should be none because it seemed too easy without them.

EDIT: If it's indeed 8=(x^2/x)-1 then the answer would be 9.

If its -8, then its this: ( -8 )^2/-8-1= 64/-9=-7.1=/=8
