This is not an attempt to get a sticky, in fact I won't give half a rats ass if it is
Keeping your files safe when Modifying Them
Common Knowledge, easy stuff, recommended
1. Back up your files, most likely in a folder called backup or whatever on your desktop.
2. Host/Upload your files. This REALLY helps if you are reformatting or whatever.
3. Create restore points or backups. This actually saved my computer once. I had modified something (I forgot what, but it was a system file) and I got the blue screen of death. I restarted, went to boot menu, and selected the backup created. You could also use Use Last Known Good Configuration. This is highly recommended, since it is built into windows itself.
(Hint: Accessed by restarting your computer and pressing F
4. Throw everything on a flash drive.
Programs for modifying, restoring, configuring, or freeing up space
TuneUP Utilities can do all of these. But it is not free. You could find a serial, which I did. This program is the one that saved my computer. It also freed up 3gb of disk space, and allowed me to disable some annoying startup things.
It does not do these things on its own. You just select the option for it and it does it.
CCleaner can clean up files and free up disk space. Very easy and efficient, but not as many features as TuneUp.
Anti Viruses, anti spyware. I use ESET NOD32, and love it. I hated AVG free, because it actually detected hal.dll as a virus. I use spyware doctor as my anti spyware, and also love it.
uxtheme.dll patcher allows you to use 3rd party themes. I really enjoy this because of the variety of themes.
