How do you write an equation with two variables in function form?

Here's an example:

3x+5y=7
How would I rewrite this so that y is a function of x?

3x+5y=7
5y = 7 - 3x
y = (7 - 3x )/5

3x+5y=7
3x = 7 - 5y
x = (7 - 5y)/3

I hate algebra, mostly because our teacher sucks dick.
If we had a nicer one that gave better explanations and more examples, I'd get along with it better.
