Hi all,

I made my UCE recently and decide to try it on some trial programs instead of online games.

How it happen:
I downloaded this sound extractor program that is placed on download.com which is meant to be a trial for us to extractor songs from animation. This trial version only allows us to use the program for 10 times. Hence, as cheap skate as ever, i tried to use cheat engine on this trial program to change the counter from 10 to an infinite number like 9999 times. As usual, i found the address, change the value to 9999 AND the problem came.

Problem:
The program couldn't function anymore after i close it for the first time so that i can re-open it to see if the counter change to 9999 instead of 9.
But when i double click the icon, i see this hour glass being shown beside my pointer meaning it is loading. Next moment, nothing appears. I reinstall again, same thing happens. (still can't open the program). I re-download the program, uninstall my current one, reboot my computer and finally re-install the sound extractor again, it still doesn't work. *Fainted*

Question:
What have i changed and done to my files inside my computer? I think i change some of the files inside my window that's why the problems occur after i reboot, reinstall the setup. Any PROS out there who could help? DB? Vener? Anyone?

Regards,
Jaymine

trial information is not supposed to be gone after you reinstall... What probably happend is that it checks wheter it's more than the max. And it was. Maybe a system restore will fix it... or maybe not...

Thanks for your reply, Glest.

Question:

You mean i can't simply use CE to edit the trial usage on the program?
I tried the system restore but still can't fixed the problem. T_T

Well, you should be able to use CE for it, but it's usualy more complicated than searching for a value and changing it. What you could have done is finding out what reads from that value and then changing the code to something that reads the max (10 or something). By changing it to 9999 they know you've been messing with it.

What you can do now is searching the registry for the value you changed it to, although it will probably be encrypted. Then you have to search the registry for the name of the program and delete everything that seems relevant for the program. Make a bakcup of the keys just to be sure.

On work they say this:

Quote:
Re-installing is a major problem for trial editions. When your trial session is over you just re-install the trial and you got time again. To prevent this for happening the creators of the program did the following:

1) They let the application write a few lines to the registery
2) The tool makes a .txt file somewhere on your computer, here the installation/application will check if its used before or the amount of time you have left.
3) Leave some parts of the application in program files, so the appliction notice that its installed before

Finding the application rules back in the registery is sometimes hard to do but its possible.
The .txt file is probably in "my documents", "program files" or "system32".

Memory Editing isn't the cause of this problem.
