Both are very overpriced, I wouldn't recommend either.

I dont know a lot about how servers work
But if you got more than 4k to spend, I'd definetly build one myself
You will probably save around 2k if you build one like that yourself..

Yes, i suggest you also build them on newegg...

Can i ask you where these servers are going to be located? If you are not putting them in a datacenter you are wasting money getting a rack mount server chassis.

If they are going in your house, i'd just get a normal computer and put some OS on it.

Can you tell me:
*Where it is going to be located
*What it is going to be used for

Thanks.

Thanks Konata Izumi and everyone else
The server is going to be located at home most likely.
For now the server is just going to run websites,
but in the future i plan on starting a hosting company, or atleast run a really big website like YouTube
Therefore i am buying a server that can do mostly everything
and i prefer blade servers cause they're small
i don't quite understand about the chassis, can u explain on that please?

btw i have a question about the bandwidth, if i need LOTS of bandwidth would my carrier (Rogers) provide the service?

Servers are usually ran on dedicated lines.
You are running a server on a residential line.

This is STUPID (not you, the idea). Especially with Rogers.... I heard they are slow and if i am correct they have bandwidth caps.

You are going to run into much trouble with this.

My suggestion is you do one of these two things:

1:
*Buy a 100mbps line from a company (residential people usually give you 10 or under...)
*Buy a rack unit (you can put up to 42x 1U servers on it)
*Put many servers in the rack unit and connect the FAST dedicated line to your servers.

2:
*Put it in a datacenter for a fixed price per month... 60 to 150 dollars.
*They are probably REALLY fast and give you a TON of bandwidth. Also, it is in a SECURE place. Another thing is that if there is a fire in your house... All the data is lost... flood, power surge etc. If there is a fire, flood or power surge in the datacenter they have Fire supression systems, flood monitoring (most likely) and redundent power backup...

I suggest 2.

Please rethink hosting it in your house... Especially if you are using an EXTREMELY SLOW residential line.

Thanks for taking the time to explain thoroughly localhost Smile

Well, if i subscribe for dedicated internet, i bet its going to be quite expensive, ontop of that the server itself will cost money

but if i put my server in a comany, it'll cost 60-150 like you said

so im thinking again now, is it better to rent a dedicated server? they cost about the same anyhow

what are the cons/pro of a dedicated server and having my own anyways?

Dedicated Server
-------------
Pros:
*It is usually cheaper short time
*Not too expensive
*You usually get exactly what you need

Cons:
*You don't own your servers
*You cannot go drive to the datacenter and do a real-life health check on your server
*They are usually more expensive (in the long run) then the second option

Colocation ( you physically own the server but another company hosts it)
-------------------
Pros:
*Much cheaper in the long run, expensive (short time)
*Cheap (the colocation itself)
*You pick your own server, and sometimes even the server speed line
*You know whats going on with your server. Fire, floods, power surges. They'll let you know
*Usually 24/7 server access (with keycard)

Cons:
*Expensive if your planning to be running the server for under a year

Yeah, that's about it.

and if you need less hdd space, you can add 2 to the quantity of ram, and subtract two from the hdd's.
