Umm I can't find a good free .mov converter to .avi
This is needed for a school project...
Can anyone help?

Look up how to use VirtualDub to convert video files and make sure you have the codecs installed for whatever format you want.

And where would I find these codecs? Because I think I need it for showing .mov on Windows Movie Maker which is what I really need.

Download a codec pack like klite [personal favourite.].
