For the C2D, 45nm technology. I don't know much about this, someone will come in and fill you in, but they say C2Ds are better than gaming.
I reccomended the C2Q because its a Quad Core. Multi-task. Games will still get their use and you can have something else running in the background too. Eventually games will have increased multi-thread support and C2Ds will fall behind.
Again, I really don't know the whole scene/benchmarks done with C2Ds VS. C2Qs. Someone more informed will probably put me in my place about my post.

Okay, thanks guys, I'll go with the original plan.
Also, thanks Blank for helping me with that build. :3

Depends what games you're going to be playing and how long you expect to be using this computer for gaming.
For most popular games out now (some exceptions), the C2D will give you better performance in gaming (not multitasking, though).
DO consider that the computer won't necessarily be more powerful with the Quad-core in there, just more able to multitask. Select few programs actually support using four cores to accomplish a task (ie x264 endcoding, GTA4, Crysis).
Probably a little late, just wanted to give you a few points.
Good luck on your build, by the way.

Thank god the dual core defense force is showing up. Not getting a Q6600 (or any quad core) is stupid.
Q6600 + Ultra 120 Extreme + Gigabyte UD3P = PATH TO VICTORY.

What the fuck, I'm not the dual core defense. I recommend quad cores as much as any. But you do realize that ANY program that uses two cores will benefit better from two cores of a higher clock than two of four cores at a lower one.
The E8400, the Q6600, and the Q9550 are all viable options, depending on which "exception programs" you're planning on using. That's REGARDLESS of a motherboard and heatsink that can be used for the dual-core CPU as well.

Okay, I'll go through the whole build.
Case: The Antec 900 is good, but if you were to buy it at another time, you could save $50. Just a heads up that retailers are willing to sell them at $60 from time to time.
Motherboard: Like slovach suggested, Gigabyte is better. Asus is good on its own right though.
GPU: If you have $180 to spend on a GPU, then get the $180 HD 4870 512MB (after MIR).
PSU: Overkill, try the 550HX (modular is pretty sweet) or a similar TX model with similar wattage and good 12v rails for the GPU.
CPU: It's completely fine. I'm still amazed I managed to get mines at $180 over half a year ago. Intel should have kept dropping the prices.
RAM: A similar-performing Corsair 4GB kit was $15 after MIR just a week or two ago. You won't be effectively utilizing 1066MHz unless you're running an insane 533MHz FSB.
Fans: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835209005 - Cheaper and better? I also noticed an unexpected difference in sound level by switching from high to medium fan speed, so you might want to try reducing fan speed if noise is a problem.

Wow, thanks so much for that. Greatly appreciated, can you link me to the GPU and PSU you recommended? Thanks. Also, I'll think I'll wait a bit until I buy the parts, I only have about 700USD right now.

If I have the extra money, I'll get that LG monitor.

I'm not an extremely hardcore gamer, I barely have the time to play any games anymore, also I'm getting a 360 for Christmas, so I doubt I'll be playing much games on my computer anymore.
Thank you so much everyone for the help. Greatly appreciated.

if you get the e8400 you'll have enough to get the better monitor.
and pc's are way better than 360's for gaming. get money instead of the 360 and be a pcgamer.

I think I'll be sticking with the Quad Core, and probably slip in some money for the monitor, but not going to buy it right away. Eh, but it's a Christmas present from my older brother. Personally, I don't really like gaming on a PC, just don't know why.
