well yes and no. literally speaking you could torrent an iso of an XP CD and then burn it to disk, but without one then not really.

and how does one install XP as the OS on this virtual machine?

You can dual boot your computer, a lot harder. Or you can follow this: http://www.cyberwalker.com/article/804
And yes, you'll need a Windows XP CD. You could borrow your friends or something.

While the main question is Vista -> XP, would I be able to downgrade to XP on a laptop?
Some of my friends told me that you can't do it on a newer laptop, because there would be some memory that wouldn't fit. Is that true?
