|
|
Im using 32 bit windows and a q6600 unoverclocked @ 266mhz FsB
a) I have 2 x 1gb 800mhz ram
b)and 2 x 1gb 800mhz ram with faster cas speeds
c)and 2 x 512 800mhz same as (a)
When i mix the 4 1gb sticks it lowers my ram speed but the latency is faster:
but i read up and apparently it doesnt matter how fast ur ram it it runs at the max of the FSB:
but which is better?:

Ok first of all, 4x1gb stick are really bad when overclocking.
It's even really bad just overall.
2x1gb+2x512mb is also bad, best preformance with same sized.
You should either have 2x1gb or 2-4x2gb.

I've had no trouble OCing my pc with 4x1gb sticks , and this is on a p965 chipset too...

FSB:DRAM ratios over 1:1 don't give you much of a performance boost, because either bus is waiting for the other one. But, because you can run your RAM at lower speeds, you can tighten the latencies, thus more performance in games and applications. Most synthetic benchmarks I know of test more of RAM bandwidth than latency, so the higher the frequency, the better the score.
Number 1 is better. My alternative would be to overclock your CPU's FSB to 333MHz and run your RAM at 333MHz (667MHz effective), and then increase the RAM voltage to tighten latencies.
By changing from 2x1GB to 4x1GB (I finally got the two different types to work without memory errors), I didn't get a drop in overclocking performance. However, I didn't overclock my CPU too much (only 3GHz), but I'm pretty sure it might be affected if I tried running my CPU at a higher frequency.

Sadly i cannot overclock my processor because it is a dell. I can use cpucool but the max i can get is 300mhz fsb, and when i did that i looked at the ram in cpucool and it had gone up to 372mhz or something staying at a 4:5 ratio
but thanks for the appropriate answer

I've always ran my RAM at half of the FSB, since the FSB is 128-bits, and the two RAM channels are 64-bits each, it all adds up. Running it out of sync will only slow it down, and running it at the same speed as the FSB is only adding unnecessary stress on the RAM.
For example, if you run your FSB at 1600MHz, then you should run the RAM at 800MHz.

yea it works well, I haven't tried with 2 sticks but I got to 3.6ghz with 4 sticks in.
temps aren't too good though, so I use it at 3.4ghz (8x425)

As everyone says, 1:1 is the optimal setting when it comes to overclocking.

May I ask what kind of memory you use?

1:1 is ideal, but in reality a divider isn't going to have an enormous impact.
RAM is so fucking fast now though, it's pretty hard NOT to be able to run 1:!.

Even 800mHz memories works good.
Just don't drop lower then that.
1000+mHz is starting to get cheaper and if the price is the same why not take that, but it wont really make any differance in most cases.

Even 667 ram would run 1:1 with 1333 fsb chips at stock, 800 is enough to provide a sizable overclock.
No point in buying anything faster than what you're going to use.
