Lol 3D game, I made one in direct x But in my case you should start with something easier or if you wan't to make a 3D game right now go to yoyogames.com and get gamemaker, there is a 3D tutorial I think...

It took me 1.5 years to finish...

1. Learn a language first.

2. The math alone is going to kick your ass, let alone learning the API.

3. You seriously underestimate this task.

If you want it easy, try direct3D and C#.
get the DirectX SDK and read through the docs and tutorials as a starting point
Also, learn a bit about linear algebra, it'll help

as for your experience in sprites, just throw that away, useless experience when doing 3d models. Go learn modeling and texturing (well, I guess you could use sprites, but really, it'll look bad. Play doom 1 or doom2 and look at the monsters. Those are sprites...)

Linear algerbra is not that hard, to add. Trig is easy too. But what's really challenging is getting into those calculus questions Laughing

If you have about a year of code experience, don't hesitate in choosing the Torque Engine.

If your a little more advanced or a dot net fanboy, then Visual3d.net(Name and URL) could be up your alley.

If your into the nitty gritty and like c++, then grab OGRE and hack on Raknet and whatever else and your good to go.

PM me if you want more information on these engines or help choosing.

PS: Try Devmaster.net to look for engines.

Linear algebra is not the same as algebra. Linear algebra is studied AFTER Calculus in university mathematics. At my university, you start linear algebra during Calculus 3 (at the end of the class).

XNA I've found is not fantastic for 3D, and is much better used for 2d and/or simpler games, due to the RAD nature of C#. Prove me wrong, but I prefer a much higher-level package.

If you want C#, try NeoAxis engine or Axiom(Which is just for rendering graphics).

HIGHER-LEVEL? What, you prefer VB or something. C# is fine and even runs on the xbox360. Of course, lower level languages are gonna be needed in a massive game though.
