 so what does defragmenting my hardrive do?

 When your file system can't lay out its data in sequence. This helps the harddrive with seek times.
 
 It does free up some space, though.
 
 I reccomend doing it periodically with piriform's defraggler.

 defragmenting organizes files together
 like parts of different files are written on different places on your disk, so it puts them together.
