I am building a computer but I do not know what DDR2 and DDR3 memory is.

DDR2 RAM is good, reliable and not expensive.

DDR3 RAM is good reliable and expensive.

The performance increase between DDR2 and DDR3 RAM is not worth the price.

Go with DDR2 RAM,

My motherboard im going to buy says it has DDR3 slots. Would I be able to put in my DDR2 memory that I already have?

no, if it says DDR3 you need DDR3...
get a p45 chipset instead of nvidia

I never said that... They aren't backwards compatible, they are the same pins though... Just different electrical voltages.

DDR=2.5v (label as PCxxxx or DDRxxx) $$$
DDR2=1.8v (label as PC2xxxx or DDR2xxx) $
DDR3=1.5v (label as PC3xxxx or DDR3xxx) $$

All of them cannot be compatible with each other since the groove on them are place at different positions.

If you got a combo ram board like those that supports both DDR2 and DDR3 then you cannot used both type of rams at the same time.

Actually DDR2 and DDR3 have the same groove and notch jawn, just different voltages. (AFAIK)
