Flabbergasted

Hi, I was wondering if not turning off your computer is better than turning it off? I leave me computer on every night, how much will be added to my electricity bill? Thanks Smile

It depends on how much electricity your comp is using, but it would still add a bit. Generally it's better to turn your computer off when you're not using it. Less strain on your hardware meaning longer hardware life. Not to mention your computer runs faster when you reset it. I had my laptop running for a few days and it was using 1.2gb ram idle, reset and it went back to 300mb (roughly how much XP uses i believe)

It's always better to save some electricity and money, also it's probably better for your computer anyway unless you have a good fan so that it doesn't overheat or anything...

Actually it would be better to send it into sleep or hibernation. When you do a hard boot (from completely off), about double the normal amount of electricity goes throughout the computer which has a very very very slim chance of damaging components. When you wake up from hibernation, it doesn't do anything like that. Hibernation vs completely off would probably have a negligible effect on your power bill.

Yup, you'd leave to leave it on completely to run anything. If you really want to save electricity and if the program isn't too hard to run, you could probably underclock your CPU or something.

Keeping the computer on last longer than those that are being constantly turned on and off.

This is why server and workstations are left on through the years they last longer than any other desktops.

For me I still turned it off when not in use, but I don't do it constantly.
When I'm not going to use it for like 3 hours or more I turn it off. Anything less than that I leave it on or schedule it to go into sleep at a certain point.
