When you open My Computer, did it say :
"DVD-RW Drive (D: )"
or
"[name of cd] (D: )
If it said the first, your computer can't run DVD's.
If second, your friend didn't burn anything on it.

edit: Didn't see the icon next to the CD.
I don't have VISTA, but is that normal for it to have that icon?

it is probably ISO
rename it to spore.iso and open it with alcohol or daemon tools etc.

CDs[R] don't retain any data after burning.
It could be a 8gig DLDVD-R you're using, burn one byte of data and the rest is gone.
Anyway, if you can't explore the image there is obviously something wrong with either the original .iso or the disc you used [happens].
Try re-burning at 1x using IMGBURN.
On a new cd, of course.

I use DVD-RW that means it is re-writable. So basically it lets me re use the disk after it is done.

For me, RWs tend to fail. I tend to stick to large spindles of CD/DVD-R because they tend to be more reliable.

You're friend didn't burn anything or didn't verify the burning procedure. When you open it, can you confirm that there are no files? What happens when you right click on the CD/DVD and select properties? Does it show that any space has been used? If not, then you need to get the file burned again.
