SSD's will come down in price, especially with OCZ's latest endeavor.

I'm trying to piece together a laptop right now.
I don't plan on buying for a little while, and I'm trying to determine the current product qualities so I know which companies to watch.
I'm wanting a SSD purely for battery life. I'm trying to make an "anti" desktop replacement.
What general config I've been looking at is:
P8400
X4500HD
SSD
On a laptop that is standard with a 6 cell, but has a 9 cell that I can buy.
And I need it as cheap as possible. What I've seen so far for a full laptop is somewhere around 1400$ USD.

if u need as cheap as possible then ssd isnt the way to go for a couple of years.

Besides, in a coulpe of years 1pb will be released and ssd would have just started there 1tb.

Cheap as possible hehe. Don't do it with ssd. A 40 GB SSD costs as much as 320 GB regular HDD man.

IF you want a good SSD go with MTron.

Raptor 150GB vs MTron MSD-S25032 vs OCZ 64GB SSD

HD Tach Avg read (MB/s)
Raptor: 75.4
MTron: 138.1
OCZ: 55.4

Hd Tach Access (MS)
Raptor: 8.2
MTron: .1
OCZ: .23

Thanks for that info, kls85.
And currently my definition of cheap is around 1400$ >.>" (but the lower the much better =P )
And besides, I don't have a couple of years to wait for this.

I'm not getting it for the speed of the HD, I'm planning on getting it for the power consumption properties of the drive.

And I'll assume that your caps lock key was on and you didn't notice.
And on top of that, 32 gigs would be more than enough for my purposes.

If you want to increase battery power, get a larger battery or cut on the processor and graphics card.

After some quick Googling, I found that you don't actually save much power at all using SSDs.

I always forget to look at Tom's Hardware. Not surprising though that I missed that, I don't go to that site very often.

And I'm planning on XP Pro SP2 (since I have an OEM disk Smile )

EDIT:
Ok, I read both the articles and ironically enough the only ssd option that is available on the site that I would be ordering this laptop from is the OCZ Core 128GB (ETA 7/25/08, oh wait, that's today).
And in the article they didn't say directly, but it would seem that the Core ssd would still provide a longer battery life over the mechanical HD's.

Plus since I'm only trying to gauge the current products so I know what to be looking for in the near future, I have a feeling that more drives like the OCZ Core will come out (and lower the price).
