Well,
1ST of all, from person experience and years for testing both XP and Vista, Vista is my choice.
Ok so I need to know your laptop brand and its specs.
Does the DVD Drive still open before booting into XP?
What do you mean, so you can open it but you cant read it?
Please answer the above q's
The problem is the Pre-Installed Vista on your laptop contained all drivers.
When you switched back to your OEM XP all those driver were lost.
Try a Windows Update, scan for a windows update a couple of times.
If that doesn't work try putting the vista disc back into the DVD somehow, (before or after XP boots up).
There is also an updating software, it scan's all your programs and checks the internet for updates. It's somewhere in www.download.com.
You need to find a way to connect to the internet.
If you have an ethernot port on your laptop then try it out.
Sorry but this is all the help i can currently give you until you giv me specs on ur laptop and what do you mean by the dvd drive not working.

Do you have the OEM vista disc or the back up disc?
