Buying a new PSU is probably cheaper than buying a 256 mb card.

Trust me. If you already have the 512 card than get a new PSU. It's a lot easier for gaming in the long run.

The amount of memory has no significant impact on power consumption. An 8800gt should work just fine though, 256 or 512. What PSU do you have?

Thats not a PSU, a PSU is a power supply unit.
EDIT: give me more information, theres lots of those, and by my opinion, the PSU isnt going to be power because of the price.
ANOTHER FREAKING EDIT: its 300 watts right?
ATI: you could get one of the HD card series and overclock the crap out of em.I currently have a HD2600 card, and i pretty much like it.
Nvidia: 8800GTS,8600GT i heard its good for small budgets.

Why are people still sticking to geforce 8 series?
8800GT costs about the same as 9600GT
and you won't see much of a difference in their performance.
Then there's 9800GTX.. Let's just say.. that's a big bang.
I just got my new PC and found out that 9600GT
requires a PSU of 400 watts or greater.. Well, of course my PSU is 350 watts.
I checked it with Nvidia and they said it is safe to use it
with my current (energy efficient) setup.
I got addicted to crysis right away
