I have some questions about hardware. I'm not a total noob about hardware, but I pretty much only know the obvious. Such as RAM, hard drive, processor, and having an audio and video card that have their own processing unit in it to spare the CPU. But I really don't understand how a a mobo, audo, and video card can be better than others. Or how an optical drive can be (if that's even possible...are they all the same?). Also, does it matter what hardware you get. Like do you need specific hardware for a specific mobo, or can you just take whatever you want and put it on the mobo.

How a mobo can be better:
* More features
* Made with stronger material
* Supports your CPU socket as opposed to not supporting it
* Cooling thingies
* How many slots it has
* How many add -ons it has

How a video card can be better:
* More RAm
* Better technology
* Faster CPU
* Faster corespeed (maybe?)

How an optical drive can be better:
* Have you ever noticed almost all cost 20-30 bucks? Yeah...
* Except for blu-ray since it is new and great HD and shit

Also, all you really have to worry about is the CPU + mobo (might not fit if the mobo is like 900 years old..) Also RAM + Mobo (might not fit if the RAM is too old or too new)

You might have to worry about CD drive and Hard drive because if your hard drives are all IDE and you have 0 IDE slots... WTF R U GUNNA DEW?

Hard drive: I don't think a notebook drive would work.

Power Supply: 500W would be more than enough for this build, but if you're going to expand, you can stick with the 650W

Optical Drive 1: It's an external drive, so it's not going to go into your drive bay.

Optical Drive 2: Although it's an internal drive, DVD burning is today's standard.

Asus P5K > Intel G35: Faster southbridge, faster northbridge (I think), extra SATA, onboard RAID support, 8 channel audio, more expansion slots, overclocks better (heard that Intel doesn't overclock well, all I know is that the P35 usually does very well at OC'ing)

I know that DVD Burning is the standard. But I know some very important things I need that are burned to a CD-R. I also happen to burn Ubuntu and other operating systems to CD-Rs.

Also, anybody have a link to a good hard drive. Preferably 300 GB.

DVD drives are backwards compatible, they can burn CDs, and read CDs, and all at the same while burn DVDs and read DVDs.

Oh cool. Do you think it would be fine if I got a Blu Ray DVD Drive and a normal DVD drive.

If you really need to use both optical drives at the same time, then sure, get both. But for most peoples' needs, one is good enough.
