I found avast to be a really good free AV.
Pro's:
Automatically scans downloads.
Scans accurate and catches many of the viruses around.
Small easy to use program.
Cons:
none

In my own opinion, avast! is one of the best FREE anti virus softwares around. However, generally if you pay for something it usually is better. I used avast! for two years before switching to bit defender. I still think it's a decent av.

I agree with happykilmore, It's probably the best Free av but yes, what you pay for is still better. They spend soo much money on making there products good quality. But the free ones don't earn a thing, they seem to care less.

I believe AVG have slightly higher detection rates, but that could well include a number of false-positives.
I tend to use avast on client's machines when they don't want a paid subscription package for their AV. The VRDB is a nice features, seems to work well, it updates well, and it doesn't seem to hog system resources like a lot of other AV's. Yeah I'd say get it or stick with it if your looking for a free one

Its unfair to see that many ratings of '1', but then again i've come to expect that of this on CEF. How many of those people who rated actually own or have tried Avast? Next to none.
Its one of the better free AV's and they have some decent features that are better than others, customer support is not bad either from what i've been told.
I personally use ESET if I have a need for one.... doesn't kick up a fuss about packers and crap like that, and doesn't cry every 5 minutes on 'possible' threats. It done whats its supposed to, low system resource usage, updates are fast additons to an already good signature database.
Thats what i'd recommend after trying loads over the years

no disrespect but antivir is better than avast. nod32 is best but u got to pay so ill put that a side but antivir is free and barely notice (expect when it updates) n has a very high catching rate (not perfect cause u need to pay for the perfect ver XD)

I have avast! Pro, it costs money and is way worth it.
Pro actually scans website html as you view that page, it warns you about javascript that can mess you up n stuff.
