1. A piece of aluminum on? Can be more specific with your 1st statement?
2. Yes, you can but totally unrecommended.
3. 100% NO!! Just a thin layer which provides sufficient contact with your heatsink fan will do.

You can put the do it without the Thermal paste, but the with the thermal paste, it will be cooler. The thermal paste for for conducting head away from it and into the fan.

Then what's a piece of aluminum? Mostly contact points are made with copper to transfer heat while the fins are made by aluminum to radiate heat. Please do not mock me.

Bad idea to mount your heatsink without paste or something to help it keep contact.
And no putting on a giant thick ass glob is not good. Put a small dot in the middle, then let the heatsink do the work with spreading it.
Copper conducts heat better than aluminum, but aluminum releases heat faster, which aids in it being distributed.

if you bought a ready computer just let it how it is
for cleaning the passive cooling just take it off and remove the active cooling then hold it under water (dont worry it's realy just a metal) wait until it's dry and put it how it was
ehm and be sure the computer is turned off when you remove cooling

Otherwise this could happen.

This heatsink uses a technology called HDT or Heatpipe Direct Touch. Most heatsink comes with flat copper base with the heatpipe connected either to the side of the base or behind it.
