| You should really learn C++ a bit more before you learn directx or opengl.

No real game will use Dark Basic.
Learn how to use vectors like a freaking mathmatician. The graphics card is based on vectors.

DirectX and OpenGL are your best bet on learning. Both are fairly friendly to work with, although OpenGL has a lot less documentation then DirectX does. Along with that, DirectX has just about every interface built into it that you will need, were as with OpenGL you will be using a lot of third party extensions for various things like sound, controls, etc.
If you are looking into learning OpenGL check out GLUT, it will help a ton.
