What are the differences in quad core processors compared to dual cores?
Why would you want to buy one, instead of a dual core processor?

A multi-core chip can execute multiple instructions at the same time.
Dual cores have two cores, and quad cores have four. All the cores are on the same chip though. So, they share the same memory, and data path to the motherboard.
So, a quad core chip may be able to execute the instructions four times faster, but that doesn’t mean it can receive instructions from ram four times faster.
Also, the faster a CPU is, the hotter it gets. Just because the CPU is a quad core doesn't mean it was set to run at the same gigahertz.
Consider a manufacturer that wants to sell a 4 gigahertz chip, but the core keeps melting. One could sell a Quad core chip with each core set to 1 or 2 gigahertz and get increased performance, but still be running each core much slower. Therefore the chip no longer melts.
Software has to be rewritten to take full advantage of multi-core processors. The operating system might provide a small automatic increase in speed, but you won’t see a 4X increase in performance simply by switching to a quad core.
Even if the software is rewritten it might not be 2X, or 4X faster because now the program may have additional instructions added for the sake of figuring out which core is going to access each part of the program.

So at this point it's probably better to just stick with dual core...

Quad core lasts longer.
Duo core is NOW.
Quad core is tomorrow.
(it sounds cool to say that lol) I would like to pay a little more for a cpu that lasts longer.
Some games has Duo core support, and there are some few that got Quad core support. (Crysis, Lost planet(?) etc.)
But in dvd/mp3 encoding, multitasking (have many applications open), extracting a quad on 2,4ghz beats a duo 3,0ghz. In the future, I believe there will be many Quad support everywhere.
But if u change cpu like every1 year, go for duo, but if u arnt going to buy new pc/cpu for a while, buy a quad.

I'm more of a tomorrow's person. I bought the quad core and my computer temperatures are between 70 and 73 degrees. I know I will probably not need all four cores at once, but I will soon!

Plenty of things take advantage of the 4 cores already.
$266 for 4 cores that OC to 3ghz usually?
BEST DEAL

Maximum? The maximum would be it's FSB, but raising the FSB to it's maximum is kind of impossible... You wouldn't post and you'd either kill your cpu or have to reset your CMOS.

I would normally say quad hands down, no exceptions, but....
Well I got an E2140 that comes stock at 1.6GHz, and it's running at 4.35GHz, gave me a little more faith in dual cores, let's see a quad get that high(and it's a 65nm chip too not the new Wolfdale.)
Dual if you upgrade often, quad if you wanna be future proof. Most likely you won't use the extra cores of the quad but it'll be nice to have down the road.
