Are you going through a router, or straight through the modem?
If you have a modem, what kind?
If you have a router, what kind?
Are you doing wireless?

The modem should have 3-4 cords coming out the back of it, and some flashing lights on the front that say "Activity", "Standby" "DNS" "Link" etc...
Is your Xbox connected into that little box?
Or is it going through a router. The router SHOULD be connected to the modem that i just described (If you do have the router...)

Ha, just what i thought.
This happened to me when i first got my Ps2 back in 2002 lmao, i tried to connect to the internet but it kept gettin stuck on the stage where it tried to find my DNS.
To fix the problem, you're going to have to call your ISP. Tell them you want to configure your modem so you can play online, and they'll know what your talking about.
Your ISP is your internet service provider, examples of an ISP are comcast, road runner, COX, time warner, etc.
Ask your parents for the number to their office and tell them your problem. Someone should come to your house and fix it for you, but it may take a bit.
(Yes, it's free. You wont have to pay any money.)

Lol, just call yourself. You don't need any kind of knowledge with internet connections at all. The ISP companies get calls like that ALL THE TIME (trust me). Simply call them up, tell them your problem, and follow their instructions.
Voila...

No, you could do it by yourself too, they will probably have you go into your router's settings and add it to the trusted area for the ports.
