I just want to know, is there a way to modify a DS yourself to play downloaded games, music, videos without buying anything?

Get an R4. You can play downloaded games and movies on your DS. It also changes the GUI of the NDS menu while you are using it.

Thats why you get an R4. It comes with a MicroSD card, which is inserted to the DS cartridge for use and into a USB Flash Drive for modification. The MicroSD can hold up to 4GB worth of games, movies, and music.
