NOT A GOOD IDEA. I tried this before. If you have SATA Hard Drives, you NEED to get the drivers for it BEFORE you install XP. Otherwise, it formats your HD, but doesn't install XP. It just formats it and leaves you with a fucked up hard drive. I suggest either moving to Linux or just make the best of Vista.

get a copy of all the drivers you will need for (make sure there xp drivers) burn them to disk
(your internet related id say is the most important if you wish to download later)
if its a sata hard drive in the bios utility set Set Native SATA to disabled
save and exit.
turn comp off and than reboot with xp cd
cheers

Shit, it's that easy? I should have thought of that when I partitioned my hard drive to ext3....

I've formatted computers at work with SATA HDs and they installed XP just fine.

| Vista isn't THAT bad. SP1 is coming out soon as well, I would just wait for that.

| You can already get the SP1 beta and use it if you're feeling spunky

You should say, you MAY need drivers for SATA. Both of my systems based on SATA installed just fine without SATA drivers.
Also, while Linux may work for you, for the average person it would be a nightmare and you really shouldn't be suggesting it to random people.
If you're a SATA user, find the WDM driver for your SATA controller and slipstream it onto your disc with nlite, or copy it onto a floppy.

Stick with Vista, once SP1 comes out, your problems will be long gone, or just not as apparent.
