This is off the top of my head, so...

When you install XP, make an NTFS partition like you normally would, but make it so that you have room for your Linux partition as well...for example on a 160gb hard drive if you wanted 60GB for Linux then make a 100GB NTFS partition, leave the rest blank. Install Windows as usual, then install Linux, let it do the default partitioning if it leaves the NTFS alone, otherwise you'll have to do it manually which is different for each Linux distro so I can't help you there. Then just install Linux and it should give you the option to install a bootloader(GRUB or LILO.) Now when you start your PC it should give an option which OS to load each time.

There are partitioning programs out there, use one of those (not sure if that works though, never tried dualbooting).

yeah you need to make another partition, if your hdd isn't already split into several partitions. i don't know if you can split a hdd into two partitions if there's an os on it already though...never tried actually.

I PM'ed you a link to a program which might be useful to create a partition.

As fullyawesome already said, not sure if you can create a partition once there's an OS installed.

well not yet tried it myself but am interested so might even duel boot linux one day

you have to do it so your boot record knows what os are on,

the windows boot won't recognise linux partitions as such I believe

anyway here's just one page with instructions and tool links to duel boot

Arrow http://www.howtoforge.com/windows_linux_dual_boot

If you don't want to destroy your current os, you can use PartitionMagic to resize the NTFS partition first, then move on to the Linux steps I mentioned.
