|
|
| I have a laptop with no OS on it right now, the cd-rom bay is broken, and no ability to boot from USB, anyone have any idea how I can get an OS on it? I'd prefer XP or Fedora, I really don't care at this point what it is. I tried installing Fedora on the hard drive with a different system then transferring the hard drive to the laptop, no luck there either.

Edit: Fuck, forgot you don't have USB either. Uhm, why don't you buy a new CD drive? |
Yeah, I have a USB floppy, and the laptop has USB of course but it's not bootable.
I did get a new dvd-rom for it only to find that it was the port that was bad, and I don't wanna put any more money into it because it's an old p3 850mhz, so if I can't get it working with what I have now I'll just buy a new one I guess.

I do have 2 other computers and ethernet, I'll look into that
But I found out all laptops will boot from a USB floppy even if they don't boot from other USB devices, so I'm gonna try something different first. Copy the files from the Windows CD onto the hard drive, booting off the floppy to DOS and directing it to the setup, install without formatting the drive, and seeing if that works.

| I think you don't even need the floppy. If I remember correctly, some OEM manufacturers have install CDs which copy the WinXP install onto the hard drive.

I could have, but it was unnecessary spending for me. It's a decent 1GHz P3 with a gig of ram, it handles basic tasks, for anything intensive I have my main computer that has a bit more horsepower
So, I ended up doing the method I mentioned before, it worked, so just for future reference that does somehow work
Then I found out my friend who was so insistent it was the bay that was bad, was wrong, he gave me a dvd burner that fits it and I was able to install Fedora that way, so everything worked out in the end Thanks for the suggestions though.
@drdaxxy's network boot, I'm still gonna look into that more, that sounds like a cool concept

Here's a good idea. Take the hard drive out from your laptop slap it in another (that has a working CD drive), and install your choice of a OS.

Generally doesn't work, I tried 2 different computers with both Fedora and XP, neither would boot when installed that way. That does sometimes work, especially if the chipset is the same between the two systems, but it's not often.
