				| Ok here is a small thing you can do if you really do not want to reformat and then have to reinstall every damn thing you use again.
If you see problems with your pc and it is a real problem with a system file this will fix it.

Step 1: Put in your windowsxp cd.
Step 2: Got to Start, then run, And type this in run.

 sfc.exe /scannow

*There is a space between .exe and the /

It will take bit to run but leave it alone and it will repair any system file that is changed.
You will not have to reinstall your programs you use and windows system files are fresh again.

				| Well, that...was...ehrm...basic...
You might want to tell them what doing this will actually do, rather than saying"Quick Fix".
I know it works, but you should elaborate a bit more.

				| It is a quick fix, all this does is check to make sure the protected system files have not been altered. It scans the files and replaces any altered files. Very simple nothing more then a file protection system built in.

If you dont have a disc, you cannot do it because it will ask for it.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But since you bought it new, it may have and option in the pc to make the restore cd.
 * This can only be executed 1 time, do not run this unless you have dvd's or cdrs to burn to. You cannot execute this again if you cancel it out.
Look inthe start menu and all programs. Look in the list for some thing like make a boot cd or backup copy of windows operating system, system restore cd.

Well, you can likely get the seller in a lot of legal trouble, being that it's illegal to sell a computer without a disc. I was part of a lawsuit against HP for that.

				| I prefer doing it while the computer is rebooting, or if you can't log on to your computer.
 1. Insert Disk
 2. Restart Computer
 3. Press F8 (Or whatvere your boot menu key is) Quickly
 4. Choose boot from CD/DVD
 5. Press Enter
 6. Press C to continue
 7. Press F8 to Agree
 8. Choose Format NSTF Files (or something like that), do not pick Format NSTF Files (Quick)
 9. Let the computer do the rest.

 Estimated Times
40 GB Hard Dribe: 1 Hour
80 GB Hard Drive: 1 Hours, 25 Minutes
 120 GB Hard Drive: I don't know...
160 GB Hard Drive: I also Don't know...
 ...
500 GB Hard Drive: 2 Hours, 30 Minutes
 ...
1 TB Hard Drive: I don't know but I wish I had this

I think you can make a backup from a preinstalled windows comp

 goto ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/BACKUP

you will need about 6 cd's or a couple of dvd's

dont know if you can do the system file checker with those backup disks but I would be surprised if you couldn't do it some way,
but at least you have got a backup if your windows gets screwed up

It is funny how some can say the same thing and others finally get what is being said lol.

hats off to "me" for explaining it by giving a small group of instructions.
