Hello everyone,

Eight weeks have passed since I first arrived at the university doorsteps. In two weeks my orientation period will come to an end. A week from now I will have to decide in which direction I want to develop myself further as an IT engineer. When I first arrived I thought I was certain as to what I wished to do in the future, but thanks to the orientation I have some doubts in which I would like to be enlightened by you guys.

There are five different directions from which I can choose. These will become my majors. When the second year begins I will have the option to choose a minor, but that is of no importance now. to start off, there are two directions where doubt is casted upon my decision:

SE (Software Engineer):
Software engineering. This direction will focus mainly on how to build mainstream software, software for everyday (business) use. Later on I will have the option to choose game development as a minor. The languages I will focus on from year 1 to year 4 will be: Java, C#, C++. I will also learn the basics of programming embedded systems (assembly) and the basics of the networking principals since knowing something about these two subjects is mandatory.

SNE (Software Network Engineer):
Software Network Engineering has the same basic priniples as SE when it comes to programming languages. Even though this will focus more on, ofcourse, the network. Minors that can later on be chosen include "Forensic Intelligence & Security". This minor intrigues me to say the least. I will learn the ins and outs of network infrastructures. I will also be creating software specifically designed for networking purposes. To give an example, packet sniffing is one of the things I will learn to do.

I am wondering what you guys would choose, and what your motivation is behind your decision. Both directions are equally appealing to me, so I am in desperate need of some advice. Make sure you give a valid motivation, if I hear "so i can b prooo h4xxxorz!!1!!" you will be shunned. I made a poll so I can easily keep track of your opinions regarding the two directions.

Thanks in advance,
Ani

I vote before read Razz

But, i would like to make sofware oriented to general business, than for networks, even networks would be better $$ i suppose, that will depends of the company that may get you as employer. I guess that any of the choose are good, since boths are based on the programming, even if is general to make software, or based on networks, if you learn pretty well any of those language nicely (I suppose you already know the most of theys) then you have a nice future as programmer anyhow.

Thank you XxOsirisxX. My first choice was SE to start with. Even so, both directions greatly involve programming, just different tastes of the same cake so to speak. The cash weighs in heavily in this decision. I guess the main question would be, where would I make more money?

I am merely asking them advice on two very similar directions within the same course. It's not a life-altering decision. I also wasn't asking for smart-ass remarks. Either give your opinion with a valid motivation, or get the fuck out.

I guess Network Mad and Java for sure.

Hmm, networking seems to be more fun as well. And I could join the police as a forensic detective.

Sure, because it's not like the ten week orientation period has more information than a quick google search. Your sarcasm fails, as do you.
