if it runs vista64, it can also run 2000 and xp (64 and 32)

and it works(it runs even dos and linux) It's just that it doesn't like killer+bee's system so I'm trying to figure out that problem

for killer+bee:
the previous version had a bug in the formatting routine of the debug info(setting a 0 in a string stored in stack at pos 100 , while it's only 8 long), so showing the debuginfo was actually causing unexpected crashes

see if this one crashes in a more stable fashion

dbvm04i booted on vista64 / e6600 cpu, 2 gig ram.

Pics in attached rar.

The Extension 'rar' was deactivated by an board admin, therefore this Attachment is not displayed.

ok, the first exception comes from executing vmxon. Meaning there's a prerequisite wrong, or for some messed up reason your cpu is lying and it doesn't support intel-vt. (will add more messages about this one...)

2nd one: WTF?

weird, according the the output vmxon should theoretically work.
Only thing that hasn't been tested is if A20M mode is on (according to the docs it'll GP if it's on, but I don't touch it. You got a ioption in bios to enable/disable A20M mode at bootup ? (of so, try turning it off)

compared to my own system:
revid=7
FEATURE_CONTROL=5
CR0_0=80000021 CR0_1=ffffffff
CR4_0=2000 CR4_1=27ff
CR0=80000031
CR4=2030

You system values and my system values from what you just showed are the same. But still no worky. :-/ My bios has no option that I can identify as being or being linked to A20M mode.

I sure you've already read this:

Code:
1.8 RESTRICTIONS ON VMX OPERATION
VMX operation places restrictions on processor operation. These are detailed below:
• VMX operation restricts the values that may be loaded in registers CR0 and CR4. The
following bits must be 1: CR0.PE, CR0.NE, CR0.PG, and CR4.VMXE. VMXON fails if
any of these bits are clear (see “VMXON—Enter VMX Operation” on page 7-26). Any
attempt to clear these bits during VMX operation (including VMX root operation) using
the MOV CR instruction causes a general-protection exception. These bits cannot be
cleared by VM entry or VM exit.
CR0.PE and CR0.PG restrictions imply that VMX operation is supported only in paged
protected mode (including IA-32e mode). Therefore, guest software cannot be run in
unpaged protected mode or in real-address mode. If a VMM is to support guest software
that expects to run in unpaged protected mode or in real-address mode, the VMM must
support emulation of these modes. A VMM can use “identity” page tables to emulate
unpaged protected mode and can use virtual-8086 mode as part of a strategy to emulate
real-address mode.
Future processors may differ with regard to bits in CR0 and CR4 that are fixed while in
VMX operation. The requirements imposed by a particular processor is reported to
software using VMX capability MSRs (see Section 6.6 and Section 6.7).
• VMXON fails if a logical processor is in A20M mode (see “VMXON—Enter VMX
Operation” on page 7-26). Once the processor is in VMX operation, A20M interrupts are
blocked. Thus, it is impossible to be in A20M mode in VMX operation.
• The INIT signal is blocked whenever a logical processor is in VMX root operation. It is not
blocked in VMX non-root operation; instead, INITs cause VM exits (see Section 3.2).

I have no familiarity with VMX operation so this info is beyond me. Wife blowing the horn. Must need me to come get the groceries...

heh ok, i'll be busy trying to reproduce the same result as you by trying to enable A20 and see if I can get the same gpf anyhow

and yes, I know those restriction, especially emulating real-mode was fun.
But as far as i've read most modern systems have it disabled by default and it's the OS's job to enable it if it wants to use it. and all other requirements are met according to the output. (cr0 is set to paging and protected mode, and cr4 has bit 13 set)

I read the same about A20 being disabled by default in someone's online paper where they compared it to the caps lock key.

I tried disabling VT in my bios and was able to crash dbvm in a new way for what it's worth. I re-enabled it and we're back to the same behavior as shown in the last set of pics.

I wish I could provide better help. I don't think my gear is exotic in anyway although it seems to be very finicky with vmx for some reason.

CRAP INTEL DOCS!!!!! (Still 100 times better than amd docs, but it's small things like this that bug me, and my apps...)

I managed to get your same result.
I DISABLED the A20 line and got that exception. So why are they saying it should be disabled ?

I read something interesting in a powerpoint online.

www.cs.usfca.edu/~cruse/cs686s07/lesson20.ppt

Slide 15, they state that A20 must be "on". So if it is disabled by default in my setup and we get a GP exception and you had to manually disable it in your setup and you then got the GP exception, then perhaps your's in on by default and mine is off by default. And perhaps as slide 15 says, it has to be on for vmx to succeed. I don't know this subject at all. I'm just speculating.

I'll try dbvm04l in a moment. I must have missed dbvm04k. Smile

yes, it looks like my system has A20 on by default. Also the docs I have (books I got from intel) say A20 must be disabled, so that was confusing
and better use this one, L has a wrong method of setting A20 (and showing the state of it as well)

try this one:
